Becoming a Dump Truck Broker (Subbing Overflow Legally)
Published May 19, 2026·Last reviewed May 19, 2026·8 min read
Short answer
You can broker dump truck work to other operators once you have MC Authority as a broker (separate filing) or a subcontractor agreement structure. Typical brokered margin is 8–15%.
The natural next step after your third truck is brokering out the fourth, fifth, and sixth loads to trusted operators — and taking a margin for the relationship.
The two legal paths
- Register as a property broker with FMCSA (MC broker authority, $75k bond, separate from carrier authority)
- Contract subs under your carrier authority as subcontracted haulers with a written subcontract, additional-insured status, and W-9 on file
