Short answer

Inspect the frame for rust at the fifth-wheel and rear cross-members, watch the hoist cylinder for pitting, run a cold blowby test, and demand PM records. Skipping any of these turns a $45k truck into a $60k truck within 90 days.

Most first-truck disasters aren't dramatic — they're a $9,000 hoist rebuild in month three that nobody warned you about. The truck told you; you just didn't know where to look.

Before you drive to see it

  • Run the VIN through NMVTIS ($4) for title history and mileage rollback flags
  • Search the state DOT roadside inspection database for the unit number
  • Ask for the last 3 oil sample analyses (if the seller says 'we don't do those', walk)
  • Confirm the truck was sold with a valid annual DOT inspection

Frame & structural

  • Rust at rear cross-members (common on Northeast trucks)
  • Frame cracks around the hoist mount and rear suspension hangers
  • Bed floor thickness — hit it with a hammer, listen for hollow spots
  • Tailgate hinges and latch mechanism (a stuck tailgate on a hot load is a nightmare)
  • Sub-frame welds visibly repaired? That's a hard pass on your first truck.

Hoist & hydraulics

  • Cycle the bed fully up and down 3 times cold, then 3 times hot
  • Pitting or scoring on the cylinder rod = $3k–$9k rebuild
  • Check hydraulic fluid for milky (water) or burnt (heat) appearance
  • Listen for hose whine at full extension — pump on its way out

Engine, DPF & DEF (2010+ trucks)

  • Cold-start blowby: pull the oil cap, watch for heavy smoke (worn rings)
  • Ask when the DPF was last force-regen'd or cleaned — $1,200–$2,500 job
  • DEF crystals visible around the tank cap or dosing unit = coming failure
  • Pull ECM records if the seller will allow — shows real hours vs dash reading

The three questions that end a deal

  1. Show me the last oil sample analysis.
  2. Show me the PM log for the last 12 months.
  3. Will your mechanic put the current DOT inspection sticker on it today?
