North Carolina Dump Truck Compliance Checklist
Print it or save as PDF. Requirements change, so confirm current rules with the state agency before you file.
Registration & authority
- USDOT number (FMCSA) for trucks over 26,000 lbs GVWR in commerce
- NC LLC with the Secretary of State + EIN + local privilege license if required
- NCDMV commercial registration at the weight you actually haul; IRP/IFTA if interstate
Weight & operations
- Know limits: 80,000 lbs gross, 20,000 single axle, 38,000 tandem (NC allows more than federal on non-interstate roads — confirm your route)
- Tarp loads of dirt, sand, and gravel to prevent spills
- Ask NCDOT about oversize/overweight permits for non-divisible loads
Insurance & driver
- Primary auto liability at the limit your GC requires (often $1M)
- Class A or B CDL as required by your truck + current DOT medical card
- FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse registration and random testing consortium
- Annual DOT inspection on every truck + daily pre-trip records
