Dump Truck Hauling Permits & Weight Limits in Texas
Texas follows the federal 80,000 lb gross limit, 20,000 lb per single axle and 34,000 lb per tandem. For-hire intrastate haulers need a USDOT number and a TxDMV Motor Carrier Certificate, plus an oversize/overweight permit for anything beyond legal limits.
Texas is one of the busiest dump truck markets in the country, and its scales are busy too. Know your limits and paperwork before your first load.
Legal weight limits in Texas
| Limit | Max weight |
|---|---|
| Gross vehicle weight | 80,000 lbs |
| Single axle | 20,000 lbs |
| Tandem axle group | 34,000 lbs |
| Steer axle (typical tire rating) | 12,000–14,600 lbs |
The federal bridge formula also applies. It limits weight based on how far apart your axles are, which is why a tri-axle with a lift axle down can legally carry more than a tandem.
Operating authority: TxDMV + USDOT
- USDOT number from FMCSA for trucks over 26,000 lbs GVWR used in commerce

Oversize and overweight permits
Standard dump truck work stays within legal limits and needs no special permit. If you haul a load that can't be broken down (heavy equipment, for example), you'll need a TxDMV oversize/overweight permit before you move. Some Texas counties also require their own road-use permits for heavy haul routes.
Load covering and local rules
Texas requires loads to be secured so material doesn't blow or spill. Many cities also restrict truck routes and hours. Ask the GC about haul-route rules before you start a job.
