Registration & authority
- USDOT number (FMCSA) — required for trucks over 26,000 lbs GVWR in commerce
- TxDMV Motor Carrier Certificate (intrastate operating authority) and TxDMV number displayed on truck
- Texas business entity (LLC) filed with Secretary of State + EIN
- Texas sales & use tax permit if you sell material (Comptroller)
Weight & permits
- Know legal limits: 80,000 lbs gross, 20,000 single axle, 34,000 tandem
- Confirm registered weight on cab card matches what you haul
- Ask TxDMV about oversize/overweight permits for any load beyond legal limits
- Check county/city ordinances for load-covering and haul-route restrictions
Insurance & driver
- Primary auto liability filed with TxDMV (confirm current minimum with your agent)
- Class A or B CDL as required by truck configuration + current DOT medical card
- Drug & alcohol Clearinghouse registration and random testing consortium
- Annual DOT inspection sticker + daily pre-trip records
